Billy Horschel withdrew from the field at the 2024 3M Open Thursday before his first-round tee time. Citing a fever, the runner-up finisher at The Open was unable to get right during his warm up before the opening round at TPC Twin Cities and will instead seek to get healthy ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Adam Long has replaced Horschel in the field.
“Unfortunately, [I] had to withdraw from the 3M Open,” Horschel wrote on social media. “Woke up with a fever, body aches, and back just locked up. Tried to warm up and give it a go but body just wouldn’t let it happen. Really disappointed to WD as my family and I enjoyed it here last year and we were hoping to improve on a T-12 finish from last year. Sorry to 3M and everyone involved with the event. Apologize to the fans as well. Thank you for all the support the last couple days while I was out preparing for this week. Once again I’m sorry!!”
Horschel came into the week fresh off the best performance in his major championship career. Holding the 54-hole lead at Royal Troon, the fiery Floridian ultimately finished in a share of second place and two strokes behind Xander Schauffele at The Open. With this finish, Horschel rose to 26th in the FedEx Cup standings with just two regular-season events left.
While Horschel may not be playing this week in Minnesota, he is more than likely to tee it up at the regular-season finale, the Wyndham Championship, in two weeks’ time based on his past playing schedule. Capturing four top 11s in his last seven starts at Sedgefield Country Club, Horschel could put an emphatic bow on a strong regular season and all but secure his place in the field for the Tour Championship at East Lake, where the top 30 ultimately qualify.
