Davy Fitzgerald: Former Clare All-Ireland winner Fitzgerald takes over as new Antrim hurling manager

Davy Fitzgerald has been appointed as the new Antrim hurling manager on a two-year term.

Fitzgerald, a double All-Ireland winner with Clare (1995 & 97) has succeeded Darren Gleeson as Saffrons boss after his ratification by the clubs in a meeting on Monday evening.

Like his predecessor Gleeson he made his name as a goalkeeper before going on to manage a host of teams, most recently Waterford and notably his native Clare, whom he took to the All-Ireland title in 2013 by beating Cork in a replay.

The securing of Fitzgerald, who had been linked to the vacant Galway job, is seen as a major coup for Antrim GAA, as their county board chairperson Seamus McMullan explained.

“Davy brings a wealth of experience to the role. His vision, drive and determination is a perfect fit with the ambition of our playing panel,” he said.

“We are confident too that Davy will bring the very best out of the emerging hurling talent that is present within our county.”
