Dodgers injuries and roster moves

Aug. 12: INF/OF Mookie Betts activated from 10-day IL; INF/OF Amed Rosario designated for assignment
After taking part in a few simulated games last week, Betts returned from his fractured left hand for the Dodgers’ opener against the Brewers in Milwaukee. Betts, who had been sidelined since June 16, is moving back to right field and will now hit in the two-hole, behind Shohei Ohtani and in front of Freddie Freeman.

Rosario, whom the Dodgers acquired from the Rays at the Trade Deadline for Minor League pitcher Michael Flynn, hit .273 with one double and two RBIs in five games with Los Angeles.

Aug. 11: RHP River Ryan placed on 15-day IL; RHP Landon Knack recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City
Ryan, who exited in the fifth inning on Saturday against the Pirates, will be sidelined for the season with what the club is calling right forearm tightness. After an MRI on Sunday, it was determined that Ryan had a right elbow injury that would end his season. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the right-hander and the medical staff are still talking through the next course of action. More >>

RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani (elbow surgery)
Expected return:
2025 (as a pitcher)
Ohtani has continued to stretch out in catch play over the last couple of weeks and continues to progress from right elbow surgery. The two-way superstar won’t pitch for the Dodgers in 2024, but he could face live hitters at some point before the season ends, putting him well on track to make his return to the mound to start the ‘25 campaign. 10-day/15-day injured list

RHP River Ryan (right forearm tightness)
Expected return:
2025 at earliest
Ryan, who exited in the fifth inning on Aug. 10 against the Pirates, underwent an MRI on Aug. 11, after which the team determined that the right elbow injury will keep him sidelined for the remainder of the season. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the right-hander and the medical staff are still talking through the next course of action, including potential surgery. (Last updated: Aug. 11)

RHP Walker Buehler (right hip inflammation)
Expected return:
Aug. 14
Buehler was much better in his rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 8, allowing one run on a solo homer and striking out five over 5 1/3 innings of work. The right-hander is set to rejoin the rotation on Aug. 14 against the Brewers. (Last updated: Aug. 11)

RHP Blake Treinen (right hip discomfort)
Expected return:
Mid-to-late August
Treinen has continued to play catch and it is expected for him to only miss the minimum amount of time before returning from the injured list. The right-hander experienced some discomfort after his last outing in Oakland on Aug. 4, but it’s not expected to be serious. (Last updated: Aug. 9)

RHP Brusdar Graterol (right hamstring strain)
Expected return: Late September at the earliest
Graterol suffered a Grade 1 right hamstring strain on the eighth pitch he threw this season, potentially ending his season after just one appearance. Initially, the Dodgers suspected Graterol had suffered a Grade 3 strain, which is the most severe, but further testing determined that it was just a Grade 1 injury for the right-hander. Given where the Dodgers are in the calendar, it’ll be difficult for Graterol to make a return this season, but L.A. kept the door open just in case. (Last updated: Aug. 7)

UTIL Chris Taylor (left groin strain)
Expected return: August
Taylor left the July 24 game against the Giants in the bottom of the seventh inning after he felt discomfort in his left groin as he stretched out a double. As soon as Taylor rounded first, the utilityman said he could feel something grab. Taylor underwent an MRI on July 25, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. (Last updated: July 25)

3B Max Muncy (right oblique strain)
Expected return: As early as Aug. 19
Muncy played in his first rehab game with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 10, kicking off what will be about a week-long assignment. If all goes well, Muncy could be activated before the series opener against the Mariners on Aug. 19. (Last updated: Aug. 11)

CF/SS Tommy Edman (right wrist surgery, sprained ankle)
Expected return: As early as Aug. 19
Edman took part in his first rehab game with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Aug. 10 and is on schedule to make his season and Dodgers debut on Aug. 19 against the Mariners. (Last updated: Aug. 11)

RHP Ryan Brasier (calf strain)
Expected return: Mid-August
Brasier has been progressing in his rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he has now made six scoreless appearances. (Last updated: Aug. 11)

RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (right triceps tightness)
Expected return: Late in the season
Yamamoto threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Aug. 3, his first since landing on the injured list. Manager Dave Roberts said the Dodgers were “excited about the command, the velocity.” Over the next month, the Dodgers are optimistic Yamamoto won’t have any setbacks, which should allow him to return at some point this season. Yamamoto said his “goal” is to be ready to help the Dodgers down the stretch. (Last updated: Aug. 3)

RHP Dustin May (right flexor tendon surgery; esophagus)
Expected return: 2025
May underwent surgery to repair his esophagus and stomach on July 10 after reporting pain in those areas after dinner that day.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on July 14 that he “was shocked” by the news, noting May was in Arizona.

“Soreness of the throat and the stomach, and goes to the ER and gets surgery,” said Roberts. “He gets surgery, and he’s done for the year. Obviously, him coming back, if everything was great, was still a longer shot. But how his season ended is very unfortunate. I’m just glad he’s OK.”

May underwent right elbow surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to repair his flexor tendon July 18, 2023. It was his second major elbow surgery in the past three seasons, and the Dodgers placed him on the 60-day injured list to begin the 2024 season. Read more >> (Last updated: July 14)

RHP Connor Brogdon (right plantar fasciitis)
Expected return:
TBD
Brogdon, who was acquired from the Phillies in April, went on the injured list for the first time this season. The right-hander gave up a pair of solo home runs in his one appearance with the Dodgers. He was transferred to the 60-day IL on May 19. (Last updated: May 19)

RHP Emmet Sheehan (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return:
2025
Sheehan suffered an injury in his first bullpen session of the spring and never got into Cactus League action. The right-hander had started throwing to hitters for the first time, but on May 16 the Dodgers announced that he had undergone successful surgery on his right UCL that would end his 2024 season. (Last updated: May 16)

RHP Tony Gonsolin (Tommy John surgery)
Expected return: 2024
Gonsolin had Tommy John surgery on Sept. 1, performed by team doctor Neal ElAttrache. He was placed on the injured list Aug. 19 with what was diagnosed as right forearm inflammation. Gonsolin also was placed on the IL late in the 2022 season with a right forearm strain. He started the ’23 campaign on the IL with a left ankle sprain and was 8-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 20 starts.

Gonsolin had been dealing with arm soreness for an extended period before he went on the IL. The Dodgers placed Gonsolin on the 60-day injured list on Feb. 9. (Last updated: Feb. 9)
