Jo Yapp makes THREE changes, tweaks bench for Boks, Karpani to hit milestone

Wallaroos coach Jo Yapp has injected a combination of exciting youth and experience as the Wallaroos look to go two-from-two when they take on current hosts South Africa in the WXV 2.

While the South Africans are still to taste victory historically against the Wallaroos, their clear growth over the last eighteen months – along with several notable scalps, most recently against the Barbarians and Japan – suggests this match will be far from a one-sided affair.

Yapp has recognised the several dangers posed by the Bok pack, and has named an unchanged starting forward pack, with the barnstorming Eva Karpani set to earn her 30th cap in gold.

The new arrival in camp in Brumby Allana Sikimeti has been named on the bench, aiming to inject significant grunt into the backend of the match.

However, the backline will see the largest number of changes, with the Boks offering several dangerous weapons outwide – including some from their developing Sevens program. Cecilia Smith slots into the starting inside centre position, with veteran vice-captain Trillian Pomare moved back to the bench to partner with fellow veteran Lori Cramer, while Caitlyn Halse retains her starting position.

Natalie Wright has been ruled out of the remainder of WXV 2 after sustaining a significant ankle injury during the side’s victory over Wales, which will see talented Western Force product Samantha Wood come onto the bench for her fourth cap of the year.

Wood enjoyed a strong Super Rugby Women’s season, and has made her way back into the side following a recovery for injury, taking part in the inaugural Australia A clash against Samoa back in September.

Wright joins uncapped forward Ashley Fernandez in the casualty ward, in addition to experienced flyhalf Arabella McKenzie, who suffered a concussion during training in the lead up to the Wales game.

However, in further exciting news for the development of the squad, talented young gun Waiaria Ellis has been called into the squad to replace Fernandez, also hot off her strong form in the Australia A tour.

“Last week’s win was a good start to the tournament and it’s important we grow from here and put in another strong performance,” said Jo Yapp in a press statement.

“We were happy with parts of our game but know there’s room for improvement in other areas and South Africa will present a big challenge on home turf.

“Sammy comes back in and Waiaria gets an opportunity to join the tour and gain valuable experience.

“Both played really well in the Australia A game last month and performed well in our recent camps.”
