Marsters to become most capped Wallaroo, TWO changes made for Scots in WXV 2 decider

The Wallaroos will make just two changes to the side that beat hosts South Africa last week, as they prepare for their final match of the year against Scotland – with the WXV 2 title on the line.

The match is set to be a special occasion in Wallaroos history – only a few weeks after James Slipper broke George Gregan’s longstanding Wallabies most-capped record, versatile forward Ashley Marsters is now set to break Liz Patu’s record as the most-capped Wallaroo, being named in the starting side for her 34th test match.

Since making her debut in 2014, Marsters has gone on to become one of the most versatile and valuable forwards for the Wallaroos, shifting within the forward pack frequently throughout her tenure.

Having featured at two World Cups – with an eye on a third next year – Marsters is finding herself in good company, with fellow team members Trillen Pomare and captain Michaela Leonard one and two caps behind her, respectively.

A lot sits on the line for the Wallaroos – they currently have three wins from three against Scotland, with their last clash being at the 2021 World Cup – which Australia won 14-12 in a thrilling encounter.

Both sides have changed a lot since that fixture, with the winner of this match taking home the WXV 2 title and all but guaranteeing their qualification for the Rugby World Cup in 2025.

Should the Wallaroos also win, it would mark the first time in their history that they would have won three-in-a-row.

Marsters headlines an unchanged starting pack, with Jo Yapp opting to make her changes on the bench in Sally Fuesaina and Alapeta Ngauamo being swapped in at the expense of Allana Sikimeti and Lydia Kavoa, which should change dynamics in the front row.

Faitala Moleka will retain her starting position at flyhalf alongside Layne Morgan, with Arabella McKenzie set to spend a longer stint on the sidelines. It highlights an unchanged backline, with Yapp opting for consistency to deliver results.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for Ash to become the most-capped Wallaroos player of all time, taking over from the experienced Liz Patu,” Yapp said in a press satatement.

“Our performances over the past fortnight have been positive but we’ll need to go to another level against Scotland this weekend.

“We want to step up and improve on our last performance and if we can play at our best we can finish the year on a strong note.”
