Two-time Springbok world champion Handre Pollard is reportedly considering a return to Japanese club rugby after his Leicester Tigers contract expires at the end of the season.

According to Rugby Pass’ Neil Fissler, Pollard, who has made 33 appearances for the Tigers since joining from Montpellier  in 2022, may be lured back to Japan by more lucrative financial rewards.

Leicester are believed to be eyeing Scarlets flyhalf Sam Costelow as a potential replacement, should the 30-year-old Pollard depart.

With options in South Africa appearing limited, Japan’s attractive offers could see Pollard continue his career in the Far East, where the former Vodacom Bulls playmaker previously played for Red Hurricanes Osaka.

Pollard remains a key figure in the Bok setup and is committed to playing a role in their 2027 Rugby World Cup title defence. Known for his resilience in overcoming serious injuries, Pollard’s experience is invaluable, and his leadership extends to mentoring emerging talents like Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu.

He has also expressed his flexibility in adapting to various roles for the Boks, even considering a move to inside centre if required.
