Despite their second half surge in Sydney, Joe Schmidt has resisted the urge to catapult Brandon Paenga-Amosa and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto into the starting XV and has largely kept faith with his growing side for Saturday’s second Bledisloe Test in Wellington.

As first revealed by The Roar Schmidt has followed Scott Robertson’s lead and made minimal changes, with the first-year Wallabies coach naming an unchanged forward pack and only a couple of changes to the backline.

As touted, Jake Gordon has replaced Nic White while Dylan Pietsch will come in for Marika Koroibete, who sustained a wrist injury early during the 31-28 loss last weekend.

There are three changes to the bench, with veteran loose-head prop James Slipper, who became the Wallabies’ most capped player of all time last weekend, left out and replaced by Isaac Kailea. The other change sees Ben Donaldson and Josh Flook come onto the bench

After hooker Paenga-Amosa and lock Salakaia-Loto made a thundering impact for the Wallabies in the second half, it had been thought that Schmidt might try to stiffen up his pack. Instead, Schmidt has kept faith in the incumbents with the forwards to once again come off the bench.

“We didn’t help ourselves last weekend falling behind early to a fast moving, high tempo All Blacks side,” Schmidt said.

“We know we will need to start better than we did last week, with the physical edge and accuracy required.”

Schmidt will undoubtedly ask his starting props Angus Bell and Taniela Tupou to get their hands on the ball after the duo were barely sighted in the first half.

The Wallabies paid the price for missing the jump in Sydney.

Right from the first whistle, the Wallabies were inaccurate, failing to win possession from the opening kick. Noah Lolesio then spilled his first touch to force Tom Wright into hacking a kick away downfield.

The messy start led to a scrambled opening 15 minutes, where their defensive line broke and they shipped three early tries.

Although the Wallabies made a strong recovery in the final 20 minutes as Langi Gleeson added to the injection of power Paenga-Amosa and Salakaia-Loto provided, it ultimately proved too big a gap to make up.

Despite their gutsy effort, the Wallabies haven’t been content with coming close and being “second” best.

“A week’s a long time in rugby, so hopefully we can turn it around,” Salakaia-Loto said earlier in the week.

“We’ve been very process-driven under Joe. It’s always around the moment that’s next and the moment in front of you.

“So, we’re very focused on just getting through today, Tuesday is a big day for us, a massive work day. So, just ticking those boxes and getting in those building blocks so we can perform come Saturday.

“We obviously weren’t happy with the result on the weekend and we want to get a result this weekend. But we understand that there’s a process to that and we’ve got to take it day-by-day and keep sharpening the axe.”

The Wallabies have been eager not to provide the All Blacks any extra ammunition as New Zealand’s critique the slower than expected start under Robertson.

“It’s always tough playing away from home,” Salakaia-Loto said.

“Our record probably speaks for itself, it hasn’t been great over here but that doesn’t mean it can’t change. We understand that.

“The All Blacks at home are confident and they feed off the energy that the fans give. I don’t know if you want to read too much into that but the field is still the same size, 15 guys versus 15 guys, 80 minutes, we’ve just got to be good enough to take those opportunities like I’ve said and we’ve got to be if we want to win.”
