Sources – Broncos, star CB Pat Surtain agree to 4-year, $96M deal

The Denver Broncos and two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Pat Surtain ll reached agreement Wednesday on a four-year, $96 million extension that includes $77.5 million guaranteed, now making him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The $24 million average annual value of Surtain’s deal is now tops for defensive backs in the NFL, ahead of Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. ($21.025 million) and Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander ($21 million). The $77.5 million guaranteed is Surtain’s contract is also the most for a cornerback contract.

Surtain, taken ninth overall by the Broncos in the 2021 draft, had the fifth-year option in his rookie contract picked up earlier this year. He is now under contract through the 2029 season.

He is the second member of the Broncos’ 2021 draft class to receive an extension this offseason, joining guard Quinn Meinerz, a third-round pick that year, who received a four-year, $80 million extension in July.

Surtain has played in 50 games (49 starts) in three seasons and has 187 tackles, seven interceptions, a touchdown and 36 passes defensed.
