It was another record-breaking night at the first stop of the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Shanghai and the women’s 100m breaststroke final was no exception.

China’s Tang Qianting fired off a new Chinese national and Asian continental record of 1:02.53 en route to gold, beating the field by nearly 2 seconds in the process.

20-year-old Tang got to the wall with a healthy advantage over runner-up Alina Zmushka of Belarus, competing as an independent athlete, who logged 1:04.48 while South Africa’s Rebecca Meder rounded out the podium in 1:05.25.

As for Tang, her time of 1:02.53 shaved .13 off of the previous Chinese and Asian records she held at the 1:02.66 produced at last month’s Chinese Short Course National Championships.
