Jonathan Rea finished fifth in the opening World Superbike race of the weekend at Estoril in Portugal as Toprak Razgatlioglu won to edge closer to a second championship title.

BMW-mounted Razgatlioglu had more than nine seconds to spare over runner-up Nicolo Bulega at the chequered flag, with Iker Lecuona giving Honda their first podium of the season in third and England’s Alex Lowes fourth.

Turk Razgatlioglu leads nearest challenger Bulega by 39 points at the top of the standings going into Sunday’s Superpole and second feature races.

The series leader won his first World Superbike crown in 2021.

Pata Yamaha rider Rea sits 14th in the overall points totals before Sunday’s action and the final round at Jerez next weekend.
