All Blacks to lose another key man to Japan

Veteran All Blacks scrumhalf TJ Perenara is expected to continue an All Blacks exodus to Japan.

The New Zealand Herald reports the Hurricanes No.9 is set to join Black Rams Tokyo. He played for Red Hurricanes in Japan in 2021.

Perenara has played 81 Tests and made 163 appearances for the Hurricanes.

He was a member of the All Blacks’ World Cup win in 2015, won Super Rugby with the Canes in 2016 and is the Super Rugby leading try scorer.

The Herald reported an announcement confirming the player’s future would be made in the coming days.

Perenara, 32, battled back from two Achilles surgeries to take the No.9 jersey in Scott Robertson’s first Test only to suffer a knee injury that ruled him out of the next two games.

He is expected to return for the All Blacks this month after being included as one of three halfbacks in their Rugby Championship squad.

Perenara will be available for the All Blacks for the remainder of 2024.

The All Blacks have already lost Aaron Smith to Japan since the World Cup.
