Instead of getting off to a strong start and starting a journey toward Super Bowl contention, the San Francisco 49ers are 2-3 heading into Thursday’s road game against the Seattle Seahawks and are looking for answers.

They have continued to lose key players to injuries on a weekly basis, and two of their three losses came as a result of them blowing 10-point fourth-quarter leads.

Analyst Mike Silver said on “The Jim Rome Show” that he wonders if the Niners are even a good team to begin with.

“To me, this is not a slump,” Silver said. “I’m just wondering how good they actually are. Yes, they have injuries. They’ve got a little older. Some of the new guys they brought in are thriving and [Christian] McCaffrey obviously makes a difference. But if they’re good I feel like they’ll win this game.”

As far as injuries, McCaffrey, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and linebacker Dre Greenlaw have all missed the first five games of this season, and now safety Talanoa Hufanga and kicker Jake Moody will miss some time.

While their offense hasn’t been as electric as it was last season, it has been good enough for them to win four of their first five contests.

Instead, their defense, which is normally their biggest strength, has been a bigger culprit.

They have had trouble stopping the run at times, and they have missed a lot of tackles lately.

Another loss on Thursday would start to jeopardize their chances of making the playoffs, but a win would put them into first place in the NFC West.
