Kate Winslet Reveals the Water in “Titanic”’s Infamous ‘Door Scene’ Was Only ‘Waist High’: ‘Leo Was Kneeling’

“That was quite an awkward tank,” the actress recalled of filming that much-talked about scene in the Oscar-winning 1997 movie

• Winslet joked she would just have to “get off the door, walk to the edge of the tank, sort of 20 feet away” to go to the bathroom during filming

Kate Winslet is revealing an interesting fact about that Titanic door scene.

While speaking during a Q&A at an advance screening of her upcoming movie Lee in New York City on Monday, Sept. 23, the infamous door moment in the 1997 film came up in conversation yet again.

It’s been a debate for years whether Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Jack Dawson could have fit on the piece of floating balsa wood next to Winslet’s Rose Dewitt Bukater after the ship sank.

As Winslet, 48, spoke to Josh Horowitz at Monday’s event, she also revealed that the water wasn’t anywhere near as deep as it looked on screen, adding that it was very simple for her to get in and out of the tank to go to the bathroom while filming.

Admitting DiCaprio, 49, has probably “got PTSD” from being asked about the viral door moment so many times, Winslet said of shooting the scene, “Well that was quite an awkward tank … because to burst the bubble, it was waist height at that time.”

“So first of all, I was regularly like, ‘Can I just go for a pee?’ And then I get up, get off the door, walk to the edge of the tank, sort of 20 feet away and I literally have to fling my leg over and climb up and come and get back on the door again. It’s terrible,” she added at N.Y.C’s Kaufmann Concert Hall.

“Anyway, yeah. So it was waist-high. Leo I’m afraid to say was kneeling down. I shouldn’t be saying anyways, Jimmy Cameron’s gonna be ringing me,” Winslet joked of possibly receiving a telling off from director James Cameron for revealing the secrets to the film.

“Actually the thing that was amazing about the edges of the tank was it was an infinity tank. So there was constant water rushing and you could hear the constant sound of water,” The Holiday star continued, adding that everybody is “entirely looped” in with “the last 22 minutes” of the movie “because you can hear this water noise the whole time.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Winslet recalled sneaking into a movie theater in N.Y.C. to see Titanic for the first time with two friends.

“When it premiered in London, I was really unwell. I had terrible food poisoning and I was actually in hospital in London, really weird. And then when it came out in the U.S. actually I was at the funeral of a boyfriend,” the British star explained.

“I mean, it’s a horrible thing to even think about now. And obviously I wasn’t gonna miss that, so I sort of missed everything around the release of Titanic, which I don’t know, is that the universe’s way of protecting me or just reminding me to do the things that matter?” she added, describing it as “quite strange” to be in a “packed theater” watching the film like that.

Winslet’s latest Titanic comments come after she spoke to PORTER for an interview published in February, recalling the discomfort she felt about her fame after the release of the Oscar-winning romance-tragedy.

“I felt like I had to look a certain way, or be a certain thing, and because media intrusion was so significant at that time, my life was quite unpleasant,” Winslet shared.

However, the Academy Award winner insisted, “It’s not a burden, any of it,” adding: “[Titanic] continues to bring people huge amounts of joy. The only time I am like, ‘Oh God, hide,’ is if we are on a boat somewhere.”

Winslet’s new movie Lee is in theaters Sept. 27.
